The book didn't tell anything about what was the danger of the vines, and they didn't seem to actively do anything after growing up in a matter of seconds, but air around them got slowly filled by something resampling pollen.
Amir hastefully covered his face - with no idea what he actually needed to worry about, just a general idea that if the plant that is associated with security system is spreading something in the air, you probably don't want to breathe it in. But his clothing wasn't hermetic, so if it was enough to get it on him - couldn't really stop that
